To Switzerland
Leaving this afternoon.
Excited, but tired. Not looking forward for the 20 hours of sitting in a plane plus at least 10 hours of waiting.
Not looking forward to LA airport, where we have to go through customs and back again just because the airport was badly designed. American customs as well - apparently we need visas on the way back, due to new laws coming in next year.
Not looking forward...

In this NYTimes op-ed, Thomas Friedman presents a convincing case for imposing a gas tax.
Wow - Truck and S.U.V purchases are going UP? People really are idiots
Skiing in 2 days..
I’m leaving on Wednesday.
It seems so weird that in only
four days
I will be surrounded by snow, freezing cold
Its summer here, warm! I went to a beach today.
Although, I love the cold.
And can’t wait to ski!
I’m going to Switzerland, with my family. To ski, of course. 4 weeks (3 weeks skiing, 1 week travel etc.). Can’t wait.

Wastefullness
On Christmas day i went to a hāngi hosted by my aunt and her partner in Paekakariki. It wasn’t really a proper hāngi, they steamed the food in an old metal beer keg, but apparently it tasted the same.
Anyway, they lay the table for at least 30 people, but less than half of that actually turned up. The food they cooked was easily enough for 50, and we ended up taking back leftovers which we...

A Blackbird
just flew into my house. It left muddy footprints and other brown and white things all over the floor, and then battered tirelessly at the only windows nearby that wouldn’t open. It was annoyingly difficult for me to push it away with a news paper so that I could close the curtains so that it would find some other window, or, ultimately the door, to fly out of. Which it did, in the end.

This is amazing. Click view public entries and read through notes from others to their future self, you’ll be awed by how many touch you.

The Fall
I was just reading this interview, and I found something which I thought was such an awesome idea.
I love Philip Pullman’s writing, his ideas and opinions. They are all very close to mine, apart from his dislike for C.S Lewis’s Narnia series, which are some of my favourite books. I felt inspired today to read through more of what he has thought and written and said.
In the...

I always try to wrap up presents so there is absolutely no tape showing, and so the rapping paper pattern continues where it overlaps (this works really well with striped paper, and the reciever has trouble finding an edge)).

A Question.
Could this be used to distinguish optimists from pessimists?
Here is a question for you.
If you were able to watch a video of not only all the good things people have said about you but also all of the bad things, presuming you would have to watch the whole video, would you watch it?
You would hope that there would be more good comments than bad, but i think on average this may not be true....

Anagrams
“To be or not to be: that is the question, whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune”
From shakespear’s famous play,
Is an anagram of:
“In one of the bard’s best thought-of-tragedies,our insistent hero,Hamlet, queries on two fronts about how life turns rotten”
Interesting…
and.
“To be or not to be: that is the question;...
Optimism
Optimism is an outlook on life such that one maintains a view of the world as a positive place. It is the philosophical opposite of pessimism. Optimists generally believe that people and events are inherently good, so that most situations work out in the end for the best.
A common conundrum illustrates optimism-versus-pessimism with the question, does one regard a given glass of water, filled to...

Are insects animals?
I always wondered about this. Of course they are. It seems so obvious now. They’re not plants or fungi are they?
So they must be animals. There only difference from us anyway is that they have exoskeletons and are quite small.
Yes, wikipedia agrees with me.

Never seen this before. Why is the world’s mood so unhappy? An article on the front of our news paper today was saying that teenagers are generally happier than they used to be, which is new.

Sleep
I think that sleep should be a person. Like death, for example. Death has a character, a scythe etcetera. If death has a character, why cannot Sleep?
In Greek mythology, sleep (Hypnos) is a often portrayed as a naked youthful man, sometimes with wings or a beard, although i see Sleep more as a woman, in contrast with death, something that tempts men. Yet dressed in white as it is not deadly,...
